300 snails reintroduced to the Waianae mountains

There are some new residents living in the Waianae mountains.

Over the past few weeks, 300 Kahuli tree snails have been flown to their new home in a one-of-a kind snail exclosure.

The snails are protected from predators like mice and lizards…with a 4-foot-fence and electric wiring in an area about the size of a basketball court.

The tiny snails are native to Hawaii, and are on the brink of extinction.

The Oahu Army Natural Resources program, University of Hawaii, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service were involved in creating the habitat and placing the snails.
