Thousands of volunteers spent the last two years removing an invasive algae that was suffocating Maunalua Bay.
Tonight, scientists shared the impact the cleanup has had on the eco-system.
In all, volunteers have hauled away about 3,000 tons of algae.
Scientists say that now that the algae has been cleared, there is a potential for native fish to return and the coral in the bay to survive.
"To get coral reef recovery we, the project actually effectively cleaned the bottom which will give the corals another chance of recruiting," said Sean Macduff.
Although most of the algae has been removed, volunteers still return to the bay every month to keep the bay clear. So far, 26 acres have been successfully cleared.
