3K volunteers needed for Hawaiian language project

HONOLULU (AP) – Thousands of volunteers from the around the globe are sought to help with a Hawaiian-language newspaper typing initiative.

Hawaii nonprofit Awaiaulu, Inc., is spearheading the effort to make 60,000 pages of Hawaiian-language newspapers available online.

Three thousand volunteers are needed to transcribe digitally scanned pages of Hawaiian-language newspapers into searchableb typescript in eight months.

The project will launch on Monday, which is Hawaiian Independence Day. Hundreds are expected to attend the launch at Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

Organizers say more than 125,000 pages of Hawaiian-language newspapers were printed in more than 100 different papers from 1834 to 1948, chronicling Hawaii’s progress through kingdom, constitutional monarchy, republic and territory.

Volunteers can register online at www.awaiaulu.org . Knowledge of Hawaiian language is not needed to participate.
