4.3-magnitude quake strikes Big Island

HILO, Hawaii (AP) – The United States Geological Survey says a 4.3-magnitude earthquake has struck near Kilauea volcano on the Big Island.

USGS geophysicist Randy Baldwin says the report still has to be confirmed by a seismologist, but the monitoring station that picked it up is generally accurate.

According to the USGS, the quake struck at 3:52 a.m. Friday about five miles west of Kilauea and 24 miles southwest of Hilo.

The area has seen a swarm of small earthquakes over the last few days. A police dispatcher in Hilo said she had not received any reports of damage.

Baldwin said since the earthquake struck on land, there was no tsunami danger.
