The city’s trucking of sewage sludge across the island officially got underway Tuesday morning.
With the Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant at capacity, the city is sending sludge to the Honouliuli Plant in Ewa Beach for treatment.
One truck per weekday will carry 5,000 gallons to the Waipahu pumping station which will sent it to Ewa.
The city says the Sand Island plant needs a $26 million digester and the council eliminated funds for an upgrade.
The test runs will continue for about a month month, to make sure the added work doesn’t put the Ewa plant at risk.
