10 Things To Know About Tropical Storm Fernanda as of 5pm August 17, 2011

1. It’s still not expected to have an affect on Hawaii as as a storm system.

2. It’s the first storm to cross into the Central Pacific this hurricane season. (coming from East Pacific)

3. Not much additional strengthening is expected for the next 24 hours.

4. Current winds are around 60 MPH, with gusts to 69 MPH

5. Currently the storm is 1177 miles ESE of Hilo.

6. Storm is moving WNW at 8 MPH.

7. By Sunday, Tropical Storm Fernanda is expected to flizzle into what’s called a remnant low.

8. As is nears Hawaii, upper level winds are expected to increase…causing the storm to shear from it’s base. This is the reason why forecasters believe the storm will not be a threat to the islands.

9. Cooler water temperatures near Hawaii will also inhibit further intensification.
