Damage near a million dollars from Kauai brushfire

Fire inspectors estimate roughly $950,000 in damages to six structures and a vinyl fence that were damaged in yesterday’s brush fire.

One home and a cottage on Kipuka Street were considered a total loss. American Red Cross was on scene to assist a family of eight that was displaced.

Three other homes and a shed along Kipuka were also damaged, as well as roughly 1,000 feet of vinyl fencing near Ala Kinoiki.

Fire officials estimate the fire burned through roughly 50 acres of brush. No injuries were reported.

Police dispatch was notified of the fire at about 2 p.m. yesterday. The fire broke out near Ala Kinoiki but quickly traveled near homes along Kipuka Street due to heavy winds.

Residents in approximately 98 homes were asked to evacuate.

About 50 firefighters battled the flames and had it under control by 5:30 p.m. and fully extinguished by 6:20 p.m.

Police reopened Ala Kinoiki and Poipu roads by 6 p.m. while Kipuka Street remained closed until about 8 p.m.
