HONOLULU (AP) – Honolulu fire officials are investigating three brushfires on Oahu, two of which are believed to be intentionally
set.
Capt. Terry Seelig says Thursday’s blazes are unusual for a summer that’s been cooler and wetter than usual.
Seelig says the 11 a.m. fire that burned 12 acres in Haleiwa, and a 7 p.m. fire on four to five acres in Wahiawa are believed to be intentional.
The first prompted the evacuation of elementary schoolchildren, destroyed several homeless tents and came within 20 feet from at least one home.
Seelig declined to say why officials believe that fire was intentionally set.
Officials believe the Wahiawa fire was intentional because it started about 150 yards from the road.
The cause of a small brushfire in Hawaii Kai is under investigation.
