Action Line Consumer Alert: Anti-radiation device may cause more harm than good

A device marketed as a shield to protect consumers from cell phone radiation has not been proven to work.

In fact, it may do more harm.

"A lot of it is people will go online, they’ll be afraid of their phone giving them radiation, so they’ll look for something and they’ll get a website and they’ll purchase something from the website," says Timothy Caminos of the Hawaii Better Business Bureau.

The Hawaii BBB has received several complaints about the scam costing consumers anywhere between $8 and $200 for the device.

"Plastic piece that you can put over your phone or a special wire that can connect your phone or antenna that will prevent the radiation from getting to you," Caminos says. "A lot of these things do is it inhibits your phone from actually working properly which means the phone actually puts out more of the radiation because it needs to work harder."

Caminos says the best way to reduce radiation is to use the speaker phone feature or a bluetooth.

"Some companies they might be able to get their money back. There have definitely been instances where consumers have gotten a refund and some definitely not," he says. "There is nothing that will completely shield you from your phone’s radiation."
