A restoration project took place Monday at Makaha Beach.
It’s work that you could set a calendar too.
It’s mountains of water that transform this beach on a seasonal basis.
"During the summer it goes down to my right, Makaha point. And during the winter, when the big waves come up it goes down to our left, and this sand shift for generations has been doing that," says long-time community leader Buffalo Keaulana.
And all that movement in the beach means the lifeguard stand has had to be moved back, way off the beach.
"We are trying to concentrate on pushing sand so the lifeguard tower can back on the beach. Right now it’s way back towards the shower there. And it belongs on the beach," Keaulana says.
You could call Buffalo the Mayor of Makaha. He has spent much of his life at this beach, and wants to make sure it remains safe for everyone.
"Our main thing in Makaha is to have the lifeguard tower on the beach so they can see the people that need help," he says.
Keaulana says the community along with volunteers from the business community have done beach restorations on their own, now he’s happy to see the city helping, with a sly smile on his face.
"We are glad now that the city is here with us. So, we are all together now, wee, wee, you know like the commercial, the pig. All right, join us," he says.
