Windward Oahu school using solar energy to save money

A Windward Elementary schools is powering itself with a new photovoltaic system.

Nearly 500 solar panels have been installed at Lanikai Elementary public charter school.
The system will provide 80 to 90 percent of the schools electricity use.

Its gonna be a savings to the school about $166 dollars a day or in a month about $5,000 dollars, so we’re real excited not only at this potential for savings so we can give back to the school programs but also the fact that were teaching our children about renewable and sustainable energy," says Ed Noh, school director.

This is the first public school on Oahu to receive state funding for a solar power system.

The state provided $500,000 dollars for the project.
