Hundreds attend memorial service for fallen officer

A memorial service is underway for Eric Fontes, the fallen Honolulu police officer who was killed during a traffic stop near Ko Olina last month.

Family, friends and fellow officers are gathering at Borthwick Mortuary to remember his life.

Visitation began about 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. Hundreds attended, including many fellow officers and others who were simply touched by his dedication to those around him.

Officer Fontes was killed on September 13 after he was hit by a vehicle while at a traffic stop on Farrington Highway.

Fontes, a Makakilo resident, was voted most inspirational in his recruit class.

Following the 5:30 p.m. service visitation will resume afterwards until 9 o’clock.

There will also be a memorial service for Fontes on Saturday, October 8 on Molokai from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The public is also invited to attend that funeral.

During Friday night’s service, Mauna Kea Street between Vineyard and Kukui Street has been closed to traffic until 10 p.m.

Brianne Randle has more from the service coming up on KHON2 News at 10.
