Surfing to be recognized as a high school sport

Surfing is headed for official recognition as a high school sport.

The governor is set to make the announcement tomorrow, recognizing the new status for body boarding and surfing which currently are only clubs, not competitive events in the school system.

"Growing up here and graduating from Waialua, I would have loved to have had a program like this started and to see it happen now is good news," said Justin Lambert, a Waialua High School graduate.

"I know a lot of talented surfers in our school and to have a club promote them and get them to get better grades is amazing I think it’s a really great thing," said Tanya Torres, a Waialua High School senior.

In 2004 board approved high school surfing but was never implemented.  The new plan calls for a start in spring 2013.

The logistics and safety plan have already been done before, and will be reviewed before launch.

The state says it would be supported by a public-private partnership similar to what was established when canoe paddling became a school sport in 2002.

For surfing, the state expects about $150,000 will need to be raised for the launch.
