An Oahu woman who stabbed her elderly mother as part of a murder-suicide pact has been sentenced to a year and half in prison.
Janet Wakimura, who pled guilty to first degree assault, stabbed her 79-year-old mother in the neck in September of last year.
Wakimura told police she could not stab herself and called for help.
The mom survived the initial attack, but later died.
Wakimura was asking the judge to release her to her family.
"Because in the state’s opinion she is not prepared to be released from custody, we’d ask for the maximum amount of time available under the plea agreement to stay in and develop an exit strategy basically," said deputy prosecutor Scott Spallina.
Wakimura has already served more than 12 months of her 18 month sentence.
She was also ordered to seek mental health treatment.
