Waipahu man receives purple heart for brave actions in Afghanistan

A Waipahu man is among twelve service members who received awards for their brave actions during an ambush in Afghanistan.

Army Private 1st Class Edward Barut and his team successfully overcame a 45-minute attack on Oct. 26 in which insurgents used rocket propelled grenades, small arms fire and improvised explosive devices.

Barut and his team were traveling through Afghanistan’s Tangi Valley during a routine mission.

Barut received a Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge for his actions.

He’s stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas.

The Purple Heart is the oldest award still given to military members who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917.

Combat Action Badges provide special recognition to service members who personally engage the enemy or are engaged by the enemy during operations.
