Hawaii test scores stand out in nationwide results

HONOLULU (AP) – Hawaii stands out as the only state to show improvements from 2009 to 2011 in reading and math test scores among fourth- and eighth-graders.

That’s according to National Assessment of Educational Progress results released Tuesday.

However, Hawaii still remained below the national average scores for eighth-grade reading and math and fourth-grade reading.

Hawaii’s average fourth-grade math scores were not significantly different from nationwide average scores.

On a 500-point scale, Hawaii’s fourth-graders scored an average of 214 for reading, up from 211 in 2009. Fourth-grade math was 239, up from 236. Eighth-grade reading was 257, up from 255. And eighth-grade math was 278, up from 274.

The National Center for Education Statistics administers the test. In Hawaii, about 9,000 eighth-graders and 6,000 fourth-graders participated in the spring 2011 assessment.
