Slater captures 11th world surfing title

Champion surfer Kelly Slater may prove that age ain’t nothing but a number, but the numbers ain’t nothing to be ignored either.

At 39, Slater today clinched his record 11th world surfing title.

He points out it happened in the year 2011 and on November 2 or 11-2. He was born February 11, or 2-11.

A "weird coincidence" as he puts it, but the day carries more significance for Slater.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the death of good friend, rival, and 3-time world champ from Kauai Andy Irons.

Slater, a Florida native, capped another incredible run to the title advancing out of round-3 at the Rip Curl Pro in San Francisco and amassing enough points to lock-up the tour championship.

Its his second straight ASP world title, 11th overall, and one of the most unlikely.

Slater was well-behind in the points race well into the season after missing a July event in South Africa, but he’d win two of his last 5-events, finishing no lower than 5th to surge to the top of the rankings.

He sealed the deal in 4-to-6 foot surf at Ocean Beach on a day he considered truly special.

Slater is slated to compete in the Billabong Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore, in December.
