Park and harbor users ready for APEC closures

There will be all sorts of security restrictions this week because of APEC including marina and waterway restrictions.

Dave Stewart lives on his boat at Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.

He says there are 129 live-aboards here.

"A lot of them are leaving. Some of them are sailing to the other islands and stuff," he says.

That’s because the US Secret Service has placed restrictions on this harbor during APEC.

A map of the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor shows all the areas colored pink are restricted during APEC.

That includes the public parking lots and some of the docks.

According to the signs, the parking restrictions go into effect Sunday at 6 p.m. until further notice.

"They could’ve had it somewhere else, not right here where everybody lives you know," Stewart says.

This area is also popular among surfers with breaks like Kaisers and Rock Piles nearby.

Francine Loo comes here every weekend to surf, but next weekend –

"I’m just going to avoid it so I don’t have to deal with the confusion," she says.

"I guess Obama can go surfing and have the break to himself," jokes Stewart.

According to maps the so-called "west Waikiki zone" will be off-limits Friday night to Saturday night.

And the so-called "east Waikiki zone" will be off-limits on Saturday.

"I guess there’s a few boaters who don’t care and they’re going to stay," Stewart says.

Like Barb Wood.

"I’m going to leave for work tomorrow morning and I’m going to try to come home and we’ll see what happens," she says.

There will also be some park restrictions because of APEC.

Starting at 10 o’clock Sunday night, restrictions go into effect at Ala Moana Beach Park.

No civilian vehicles will be allowed, but people can walk to the park and beach.

There will also be off-limits areas at Ala Wai Community Park and Kapiolani Park.

Most of the restrictions run through the end of next week Monday.
