The state has decided to close Iolani Palace till Tuesday of next week, saying the move is meant to secure the palace during the APEC summit.
A group of protesters locked themselves on the grounds overnight.
They removed the chains early Monday morning.
Iolani Palace was not originally on the list of security restrictions for APEC.
Late Monday afternoon the state explained the reason for the last minute change.
"In light of all the intelligence we’re getting in light of all the incidents that are happening all over honolulu we just felt that it was proper to take action at this time," said state land department director William Aila.
The grounds of Iolani Palace will reopen on Tuesday, November 15 at 6 o’clock in the morning.
