Angie and Philip Soto-Balmores are on a money saving mission.
Hours of preps come down to this shopping trip at Kapahulu Safeway.
“We’re getting six Campbell soups today.”
They normally cost $1.79 each but with the sale price and coupon the price is chopped.
“This is an item that’s a really, really cheap deal so they’re basically 60 cents each,” Angie said.
The trick is to use coupons on items that are already on sale.
And not just one coupon, but a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon.
That way you get the lowest price possible.
But be sure to check the expiration date. Some items are on sale because they will expire soon!
“If it’s on sale and it expires like tomorrow, that’s a downside, you can’t eat that!” laughed Angie.
Now on to some drinks.
“You buy ten propel and you get five for free,” said Angie.
Add in a coupon.
“So not only am I getting five for free, I get two dollars off the total that I’m buying,” Angie said.
With a manufacturer and store coupon, a $4.59 box of Wheat Thins is sliced by 65%.
But be sure to check if there is a limit. Stores may limit you to a certain number of an item on sale, and manufacturer coupons may state a limit od hoq many coupons you can use of that certain coupon.
“Today I can only buy four , I have a manufacturer coupon for a dollar off so that makes it a $1.49 for a box of Wheat Thins,” said Angie.
Now for some yogurt that’s on sale: 10 for seven bucks.
“We have a coupon that’s buy ten for one dollar off and that makes them for 60 cents each,” said Angie.
With coupons, They score Febreeze for a $1.79 ,Tombstone pizzas for $3.33 each and a free half gallon of ice-cream.
Now it’s time for the fun part, checking out.
Angie clenches her coupons, the bill climbs well over 100.
The grand total: nearly $192.
Her Safeway card brings it down to $133.
Add in Manufacturer coupons, it drops to $87 including tax.
The 55% savings isn’t the only thing Angie is excited about.
“Here come more coupons! Yay I love catalinas because they’re good for future deals.”
“It can really fun but it takes a lot of work to plan for it but is it worth it? Yeah in the end it is,” said Angie.
Now its time to see Lindsey Pierce’s hard work pay off in Kaneohe.
First stop, Safeway.
“Some fruit snacks, from pop tarts and some cheetos with some free pepsi,” said Lindsey checking out her shopping list.
Lindsey grabs some Ragu on sale.
“If I buy four of them, I get two boxes of pasta free,” said Lindsey. “My other secret is I have two coupons for buy two Ragu, get a $1.50 off pasta, so I’m actually going to get two more for free.”
Lindsey uses coupons for free pepsi. Pop tarts for $1.99 when they’re normally $4.19 a box and she also scores a free half gallon of icecream.
“This is another thing you wanna look out for,” said Lindsey pointing to coupons available at the store. “When you are in stores, they have coupons right there, just grab a few save’em up for a sale.”
Her bill for about 30 items reaches $130.
Add in the coupons: it shrinks to $36.
That’s a 73% savings.
“I saved $90, not too bad for hour pay right?” smiled Lindsey.
At Walgreens she stocks up on some sale items.
She grabs some Covergirl makeup on sale for buy one get one 50% off. On top of that, she has a coupon of course!
“Between these two items one of them will be half off. So I’m buying two items but they’ll both be free.”
She heads to to toiletrees.
“Buy one of these floss, get a dollar off with my coupon , but I’m also going to get a $2 register reward, so this floss will actually cost me 29 cents after that,” said Lindsey.
Lindsey grabs candy and medicine among other items.
“I did three separate transactions and I got about 40 dollars worth of stuff , paid eleven dollars but I still have 5 dollars to use on my next trip.”
Lindsey saves 85% at Walgreens.
“$120 dollars saved in just my two hours of shopping, not too bad so, $60 an hour. “
