$3.5 million donated to create Hope Lodge on Oahu

The American Cancer Society took a big step forward Tuesday in the construction of the state’s first "Hope Lodge."
The Hope Lodge is a free home away from home for cancer patients that must travel to Oahu for treatments.
The American Cancer Society received a $3.5 million donation from the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, the largest donation ever received by the society.

"There’s so many people who have cancer from the neighbor island who need treatment here on Oahu and what a wonderful way for them to have a place to stay for their treatment," said Ching Foundation Trustee Raymond Tam.

"Currently some 650 individuals have to come Oahu for their life-saving treatment," said American Cancer Society Board Chair Sen. Rosalyn Baker.

The Hope Lodge will be located on Vineyard Boulevard near the Queen’s Medical Center.
Construction is expected to begin in 2014.
