Surfers concerned about proposed rules for North Shore surf contests.

About 30 people attended a meeting in Haleiwa this afternoon to discuss proposed rules for surf contests on Oahu’s North Shore.

The proposal limits the number of contest days to 64 each year.

Recreational surfers say that’s too much, and that the contests keep them out of the water.

Professionals say surfing is their livelihood and would like to see the 64-day limit increased.

Women surfers and bodyboarders also raised concerns over a lack of opportunities for them to host contests.

Some surfers would also like to see the contest calendar set a year in advance, rather than just a few months in advance.
