APEC cost the city as much as 25 percent less than they thought it would and that’s before millions of dollars in possible federal reimbursement.
The city had budgeted $43 million over two fiscal years to prepare for and execute services and security related to APEC.
An $8.6 million contingency line wasn’t needed, insurance came in $2 million under budget, and the police and fire departments say they spent less than their $18 million and $8 million respectively.
“I have no doubt that we can hold our own with any city in the united states and many cities in the world in terms of our ability to bring a very significant event together and have it properly coordinated,” said Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle.
The city is seeking federal reimbursement for some costs and says the maximum may be $7 million.
