A Kailua elementary school connects their students to the environment

There aren’t many schools that can say they have their own orchard.

Kokua Hawaii foundation is hoping to change that.

The group is starting with Aikahi Elementary in Kailua, where students in each grade planted a tree today, creating a legacy orchard.

The students planted lemon, mulberry, grapefruit and other fruit-bearing trees.

"This is a shining example that these kids do know where their food comes from they have that knowledge to take with them," says Kim Johnson, Kokua Hawaii Foundation.

"We just get the ingredients and then we’re cooking it so it’s really fresh and it’s good," says Kathryn Spiezio, Aikahi Elementary School.

Today’s planting ceremony included a performance by Kokua Hawaii co-founder Jack Johnson.

It also celebrated the fifth anniversary of the "aina in schools" program, which is aimed at connecting children to the environment.
