Crews searching for missing surfer on Oahu’s north shore

The Coast Guard and Honolulu Fire Department continue the search for a surfer reported missing in the vicinity of Sunset Beach on Oahu‘s North Shore.

Crews are searching for a 51-year old man who is 6 feet 2 inches tall and approximately 160 pounds.

He was reported missing at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A friend reported that a white surfboard was missing from the house and he had stated he was going surfing before left.

The surfboard was located at Rocky Point near Sunset Beach at around 11:44 p.m.

The Honolulu Fire Department’s Air One helicopter crew began at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, but suspended at midnight.

They resumed their search Thursday morning using Air One and a rescue boat. The fire department is concentrating their search close to the shore.

The Coast Guard’s search area will expand West of Sunset Beach. The search area already covered is approximately 159 square miles.

The on scene weather is reported as winds out of the southeast at 11.5 mph and seas of 10 to 12 feet and building rapidly.

The Coast Guard is asking anyone with any information regarding the missing surfer to contact the Honolulu Sector Command Center at 808-842-2600.
