Pilot program provides public restrooms for Chinatown

Locals and visitors to Honolulu’s Chinatown have a new place to "go."

As part of a pilot program, the public restroom at River of Life Mission on Pauahi Street was opened for Saturday and Sunday use.

The city along with the Chinatown Business and Community Association contributed $10,000 to keep the facilities open for the next 90-days.

Funding also pays for supplies, a janitor and a security guard.

"Be cleaner, the smell will go away hopefully, that’s what my hope is," said Sam Say, owner of M.P. Lei Shop.

"[It's] not just for the homeless, it’s for you and I and the bathroom are super clean an safe," said Chu Lan Shubert-Kwock of the Chinatown Business & Community Association.

The restroom will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the weekends only.

If successful, the community hopes to build permanent facilities.
