Halawa prison inmate pleads guilty to assault

A man serving time at Halawa prison will spend even more time behind bars for his role in the death of a fellow inmate.

James Gouveia pled guilty today to assault, a charge that was reduced from manslaughter as part of a plea agreement.

In 2009, Gouveia got into an argument with Monty Young, punching him several times.

Young was serving a life sentence for murder.

Gouveia was serving time for auto theft.

He will will have an additional five years tacked on to his prison term, when he is sentenced in February.
