KAPOLEI, Hawaii (AP) – Six of Hawaii’s top 10 facilities for toxic releases in 2010 were in Leeward Oahu.
Leading the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list is Hawaiian Electric Company’s Kahe Point generating station, with more than 550,000 pounds of chemicals. Second on the list is Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, with more than 420,000 pounds. Power plants in Pearl City and Kapolei and two refineries in Kapolei are also on the list the EPA released Thursday.
Two Maui Electric Company generating stations are ranked fifth and 10th. A Hawaii Electric Light Company generating station in Hilo ranks sixth and the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area range facility in Hilo is ninth on the list.
The EPA says toxic chemicals released from Hawaii facilities decreased 15 percent in 2010 from 2009.
