Hundreds of paddlers held a memorial Sunday at Hanaka’o'o beach in Lahaina to pay tribute to William Kalanikai Gonzales.
The 60-year-old was setting up flags for a canoe race when a boat ran over him in December.
Gonzales was a long time race official for Maui’s summer regattas and Maui County’s High School Canoe Paddling League.
He is survived by his wife, three children and four grandchildren.
