Oahu high school cheerleading teams take top honors

Hawaii has become a national force in the world of cheerleading.

In just the past two weekends, two Oahu schools have been named national champions.

Radford High School was named the grand champion in the National Cheerleading Association High School Championships over the weekend in Dallas, Texas.

The varsity squad beat out more than 200 other teams considered the best of the best.

As for their motivation, Radford actually won the championship two years ago, but then got edged out by a team from Oklahoma last year.

So they were determined to get back on top.

"We haven’t stopped practicing since we left Dallas last year, we didn’t take any breaks this year,” said Bo Frank, Radford head coach.

Coach Bo Frank says obviously, the kids have to be in great physical shape.

But being able to execute the stunts in front of judges and a large audience also takes a lot of mental preparation.

"I think that really makes a difference because when you come on to the floor and you’re between 14 and 17 years old and there’s a packed arena and the lights and everything is flashing, you should freak out,” said Frank.

Two weekends ago, Campbell High School‘s varsity squad was crowned the champion at the Gator Bowl Cheer and Dance National Competition in Jacksonville, Florida.

The Sabers also performed at the halftime show of the Gator Bowl football game.

Flying high from their victory, these young ladies are learning that hard work really does pay off.

"The girls and I worked really hard and I feel that we really deserved this trophy,” said Rustean Cullen-Utu.
