Companies that choose to be green can gain a big customer following.
King Windward Nissan was featured here on the news last year when the dealership decided to put photovoltaic cells on the roof of the dealership.
The company has stepped up its environmental consciousness.
"We have an automated car wash, Kirk, and thanks for having us here and our car wash as a part of trying to save resources, as you know in Hawaii, water is very, very precious and the car wash we use does recycle the water,” said Bill Mickelson of King Windward Nissan.
The company is going one step further, incorporating LED’s as incandescents burn out.
"Where the lights, the tubes themselves are more expensive over the long run it’s going to save us money, and electricity,” he said.
Perhaps the biggest coup for King Windward Nissan, and Nissan in general, has been the introduction of the all-electric Leaf automobile.
"Yes, the leaf has been going very well. I do try to meet all the Leaf owners as they come back to pick up their license plates and what not just to touch base and ask how it’s going and everyone just loves the car,” he said.
And if you live in town, what’s not to love? There are new charging stations being introduced all the time and if you drive an electric car, you park for free!
"Right now, the range of the Leaf is 100 miles which actually works out just right just for this island. It will charge overnight, just like a cell phone. Bring it home, plug it in, in the morning, you’re ready to go,” he said.
As you might imagine, demand for the Leaf is high.
"Production is going to be ramped up as Nissan works on completing their new factory in Tennessee to meet the demand,” he said.
