In Sickness & In Health: Preparing for childbirth

Mothers-to-be, especially those who are giving birth for the first time, could benefit from some coaching.

There is help available at Castle Medical Center.

Castle has adopted something called the Bradley Method when it comes to helping mothers-to-be prepare for childbirth.

"The Bradley Method is a comprehensive course of childbirth education so we do have a twelve week class and we talk about natural childbirth using relaxation techniques,” said Stephanie Capllonch.

There is a reason for the three month "training" course.

"It does encompass keeping the mother and baby healthy during pregnancy and that’s through the use of good nutrition, pre-natal nutrition, exercise programs and really education.  Educating both the mother and her partner,” said Stephanie Capllonch.

Why is the Bradley method a good plan for moms-to-be?

"Natural childbirth is the safest and healthiest way for a mother to give birth, for both her and the baby.  It’s – mothers have been, the woman’s body’s designed to give birth, so really the Bradley method is teaching her to tune inward and really to relax through the contractions and be able give birth naturally,” said Stephanie Capllonch.

The classes are held once a week and last about two hours.

It costs $300 for two people.

"We actually like you to start around your fifth or six month and that gives you enough time to go through the whole course and allows you some time afterwards to continue practicing the relaxation techniques and also starting a little early…you get a head start on the pre-natal nutrition and getting your body prepared physically for this athletic event that’s going to be occurring,” said Stephanie Capllonch.
