Coach Chow names UH Defensive Coordinator

UH Head Football Coach Norm Chow announced the hiring of Thom Kaumeyer as defensive coordinator during a luncheon Wednesday in downtown Honolulu.

“I’ve known about Thom for a long time.  He’s really a tough hard-nosed discipline type of guy and I got a call from a mutual friend that was from Jacksonville and talked about Thom so I thought I’d give him a call,” Chow said.  “I’ve never coached with him but he and his wife flew out and the four of us had dinner and it was very obvious he had a passion for football and Hawaii football as well because like I said he’s part Japanese so we knew we had some ties here and he’s excited to get here.  We needed to go a little bit extra mile to get him here financially but he’s here and he’ll be here next week so we’re fired up about it.”

Coach Chow also took questions from football fans who had gathered at the Hukilau Sports Bar & Grill.

When asked about recruiting, Chow said “for years until the recent year it wasn’t difficult to recruit against the University of Hawaii because they didn’t recruit very well locally.  I mean the Kurt Gouveia story is chronicled but now I think because of the state of the program and our desire to show the rest of the country what we’re all about we’re going to try to convince them that it’s not necessary to go to the mainland to get the exposure that you want to get.  It’s not necessary to go to Oregon.  It’s not necessary to go to UCLA.  We’re going to do a better job of recruiting I promise you that.”
