Struggling papaya growers in the state are set to get a shot of sales in Japan. A recent agreement has been made.
For the first time, the country has approved the commercial shipment of Hawaii’s "Rainbow" papayas.
This variety is genetically modified to be resistant to the ringspot virus. This virus nearly destroyed the state’s papaya crop and prevented the fruit from being exported to Japan.
One distributor says this agreement has secured shipments of 15,000 of papayas a week to Costco Japan.
