Major improvements are coming to ease flooding on Waianae Coast

This is just a glimpse of what Waianae Coast residents have endured in the past several decades…heavy rains damaging and flooding roadways.

"It has been a long road getting here and just two massive storms in the last two years kind of threw everything over the top," says Representative Jo Jordan, (D) Waianae, Makaha, Makua.

The release of two million dollars from the state to fix the issue is a relief to Representative Jo Jordan, but she says this is only the beginning.

"It’s going to be that team effort the team effort would be private businesses coming and helping the government helping with the material equipment that they have," says Representative Jordan.

The money will cover planning, design and construction to improve Lualualei flats and Puhawai Road.

"The funds will actually be delegated over to the City and County they will go ahead and take the funds that the state has allocated to address this issue," says Representative Karen Awana, (D) Nanakuli, Lualualei, Maili.

Some of the work include improvements to the drainage system, building better banks near the bridge and retaining walls and leveling Puhawai Road.

It was almost exactly a year ago when flood waters created a raging river on Puhawai Road stranding two people who tried to drive through it in their car.

They had to be rescued by firefighters.

Improvements in the area are expected to begin early next year.

"In this case it is taking care of the west side of Lualualei Valley which is the Puuhulu area however there are long range plans for the area of Hakimo and Paakea roads," says Representative Awana.
