Should kids under 16 be required to wear helmets while skateboarding?
A bill moving through the State Capitol aims to make that a law.
Under the bill, if the kids don’t wear helmets, their parents or guardians would be held liable and would have to pay a fine of $50 to $250.
The most recent skateboarding accident happened last October, when an 11-year-old boy skateboarding down a steep hill in Salt Lake crashed into a handi-van.
Last May, Hawaii Pacific University basketball player and former Punahou standout Kameron sSteinhoff died from his injuries in a skateboarding accident.
And, in November of 2010, 22-year-old Kenny Bergstrom was badly injured while skateboarding down Tantalus Drive.
The bill passed the House Health Committee Friday.
