HONOLULU (AP) – Kaiser Permanente Hawaii will be giving the state Department of Education a grant to help schools applying for certification under a national program to make campuses healthier.
Kaiser will present a $40,000 check to Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi on Monday. Education officials say the money will help schools applying for Healthier US School Challenge certification. It’s a voluntary initiative by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food and nutrition services.
As of October, there were more than 2,000 certified schools nationwide, but none in Hawaii.
The certification recognizes schools for making significant changes to aspects of school health including food, nutrition education and physical activity.
