One of Hawaii’s master quilters has passed away after a bout with breast cancer.
Poakalani Serrao helped revive Hawaiian quilting. "she was part of this Renaissance of quilting that not only happened here in Hawaii but actually, worldwide. But her niche was with the Hawaii quilting," said her daughter, Cissy Serrao.
Many knew her as the one-handed quilter; she was born with only one hand and showed people that nothing is impossible.
Poakalani was 77 years old.
She leaves behind her husband, four children and two grandchildren.
