An undersea cable’s goal to distribute and produce clean energy from neighbor islands to Oahu is gaining lawmakers’ support.
The measure passed on Friday by the house committee sets up a regulatory structure for the proposed cable. Governor Abercrombie testified the move would facilitate future funding and development.
Governor Ambercrombie said, "the alternative obviously is to be utterly and totally dependent on the importation of oil no matter what price and no matter who controls it."
Some concerns were expressed by OHA, which said a cable would lie across submerged ceded lands. Others testified the undersea cable would be too costly.
The project itself is still undergoing environmental review.
