Moiliili residents displaced by hazardous smoke

Several dozen residents in the University of Hawaii and Moiliili area weren’t allowed to go back home because of the smoke caused by the fire Sunday. They were evacuated in the morning.

Rocky Baso, a displaced resident, said "there was a lot of people, a lot of different families, and a lot of them had kids so (it) was kinda hard."

Another resident, Chris Moser, said the smoke was horrible. "It probably ruined all my stuff."

Others were concerned about the smell the smoke would place on their clothes. Vai Tadafu said, "it’s gonna smell like burn. Smell like burn. And we don’t wanna wear, because people think, you smell like burn; you gotta wash your clothes."

And then there was frozen food. "We went to his dad’s house to put our groceries in his dad’s freezer for a little while," said displaced resident Belinda Mann, talking next to her partner. "And when we came back (police) still had it blocked off."

The Red Cross opened an emergency shelter at Manoa Valley district park for the displaced residents at about 5 p.m.
