PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) – Federal scientists responsible for protecting sea turtles and monk seals are moving into a new science center in Pearl Harbor.
A blessing ceremony on Tuesday will open the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s new marine science facility on Ford Island.
The building will give the agency a place to help sick or injured Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. It will include 15 marine tanks and a salt-water well.
The building is the second phase of NOAA’s new regional headquarters, the Pacific Regional Center. Fifteen NOAA offices around Oahu will be moving into the complex housed in renovated World War II-era airplane Federal economic stimulus funds are paying for the $131 million center.
