Hawaii receiving millions to cover APEC security costs

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Hawaii will receive $7.48 million from the federal government to help cover some of the security costs incurred by hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference, Senator Daniel K. Inouye announced today.

The money comes from a National Special Security Event (NSSE) grant administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"The APEC conference was a once in a generation opportunity to showcase Hawaii and I am very proud of the extraordinary effort put forth by the city, the state, and our partners in the federal government. None of that work would have been possible without the community’s commitment to sharing our Aloha spirit with the world. These funds will help the state cover some of the costs of hosting APEC and I would like to thank the administration for recognizing the need and helping Hawaii," said Senator Inouye.

"This was a great team effort, and it shows the power of working together. We executed APEC with great precision, and recouping some of our expenses from the federal government was the final part of our plan. Senator Inouye’s leadership in APEC was powerful. He helped Hawaii to secure the APEC meeting, he made sure that it was an extraordinary success, and he ensured that the federal government provided appropriate financial support," said Lt. Governor Brian Schatz.

"I was very pleased with the tremendous collaborative effort in partnership with FEMA to help streamline the submission and approval of this grant. It is a testament to the power of strong teamwork between the federal, state and city," commented Major General Darryll Wong.

The City and County of Honolulu says it spent about $21 million on APEC security costs. The state pegs its security-related spending at $2.7 million.
