According to Kauai officials, an overflowing manhole was reported at about 6:30 a.m. on Kaumualii Highway near the Ele’ele Shopping Center.
Wastewater officials said that the spill occurred because the volume of water in the sewer main exceeded its capacity due to the heavy rain that occurred over the last 24 hours.
The sewage spilled from the manhole, mixed with the storm water runoff, and has run along the side of the road and is draining into Hanapepe Valley, officials say.
The actual volume of sewage spilled is unknown, but officials presume to be more than 1,000 gallons and less than 10,000 gallons.
Department of Health officials have been notified about the spill.
