Diamond Head trail to close for construction

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will close the Diamond Head summit trail in the afternoon on Thursday, March 8 to remove equipment and other construction debris from the summit area.

The Division of State Parks is closing the trail Thursday afternoon and escorting visitors down from the summit starting at 1 p.m. so that all hikers will be off the trail when the contractor will remove equipment and other construction debris from the new loop trail and the reconstructed narrow ledge area outside the Fire Control Station at the summit.

These repairs have improved hiker flow, with decreased congestion and overall safety.

Hikers will be allowed to begin their trek to the summit until 12 noon. Ascent to the summit will be prohibited after that time. DLNR State Parks personnel will be stationed at the summit and escort people down starting at 1 p.m.

The trail will remain closed for the rest of that day but is expected to reopen Friday, March 9 at 6 a.m.
