Elderhood Project: "The Games" get seniors active

Let the games begin!
Next Thursday, scores of seniors will gather to compete in "The Games."

They are the brainchild of Herb Yasuhara, who worked with seniors, but found out they weren’t being very active.

"As soon as they come to the area, the seniors would just sit down and play mah jong or they would play hanafuda and they would sit down and do nothing," Yasuhara says.

That got Herb thinking it would be a good idea to get the seniors moving – he organized games that would keep them on their feet and socially engaged.

Understand now, this is just a practice area at Makua Alii when the games are held, the area the seniors walk is much larger.  They like it that way.

Admittedly, this is my first time at the games, but they gave me a chance to use one of the croquet mallets to hit the pin.

Yes, yes – somebody else got it this close for my final shot.  It may have been Chizu Stanley who is a medalist in the games.
