Hail on the Big Island, rain in Maui County

Thursday afternoon, several KHON2 viewers captured a rare sight of hail coming down by the hand full in areas surrounding Waimea.

But, Mother Nature focused much of her energy on Maui County.  Molokai getting the worst of it.

"I know one house seemed to have a lot of debris washed into the driveway and into the house itself," said Rod Antone, Maui County Spokesman.

The residents of the home on Kamehameha IV Highway woke up to find water almost to their knees.

Near Wailuku on Maui Jody Takamiya, says the rain was coming down hard and fast.

"It hasn’t rained this bad in a while on maui," she said.  "Oh my gosh, the rain was really coming down hard and I just happened to walk past my door and looking and oh my gosh a couple more inches and it would be coming into my house."

Jack Gist with KAOI-Radio Group estimates there was up to four inches of rain an hour in Wailuku.

"I was talking to a lot of people and they were saying it’s the worst they’ve seen these are residents that have been on this island years and years," said Gist.

Iao Valley and Polipoli State Parks were closed because the rising water in Iao stream.

"It’s definitely swollen if you look at the pictures there are trees on each side and the river is basically up to the top branches," said Antone.

Maui County Civil Defense is at level 3 staffing monitoring the heavy rains  – expected to get worse overnight.

"We just don’t know how heavy it’s going to hit us in this area," said Gist.

Also – on Maui, Lydgate Park and the Wailua golf course will be closed again Friday and re-open on Saturday, weather permitting.
