NWS: Tornado touches down in Lanikai, Enchanted Lake

Enchanted Lake residents say it sounded like a train roaring through their neighborhood Friday morning.

Strong winds ripped off a patio roof, sending it from the back of this house to the front yard.

"I heard the noise, the big break away, and I could see it right through my bedroom door. I didn’t see it fly away, but I just heard that whoop, that big whoosh and it was gone," said Enchanted Lake resident Harold Sylvester.

"So, I ran in the living room and I saw one nother chunk of paper coming, and blew right through the next window, and it just exploded. Glass even ended up in my kitchen and everything," said resident Robert Paulo.

A number of homes on and near Akumu Street were damaged. One house had most of its roof ripped off.

While there was property damage no one was injured.

This afternoon the National Weather Service Office dispatched a damage survey team to investigate a string of damage from Enchanted Lake area to Lanikai.

The survey team inspected the wind related damage and interviewed homeowners and other eyewitnesses and sought to determine whether the damage was related to a tornado or straight-line winds.

The NWS says the evidence collected indicated that a waterspout very likely moved ashore in Lanikai and traveled inland before dissipating in the Enchanted Lakes subdivision.

Upon moving ashore the waterspout becomes classified as a tornado.

Thus, the damage survey team has determined a tornado formed and tracked between Lanikai and Enchanted Lake.

The NWS says the circulation very likely lifted and then returned to the surface as it traversed an area of higher terrain between Lanikai and the Enchanted Lakes area, and perhaps later in the Enchanted Lakes subdivision.

Tornado Statistics:
Time – Approximately 7:15 – 7:30am
Strength – EF0 with wind speeds of 60-70mph
Average width - 20yds
Path length – 1.5mi
