Across town, pounding rain caused another raging river this time under Anahulu Bridge in Haleiwa.
"There was just torrents, and there was speed," says Haleiwa resident Carol Philips.
A huge chocolate shake of mud, debris and whatever got in mother nature’s way.
"It was a couple feet higher than it was now, and most impressive moving so quickly," says Philips.
For Nick Makowski, by the time he woke up it was too late.
"About 7 this morning, my dog wanted to go out and looked out and my truck was in about a foot of water," he says.
Paukauila stream in Haleiwa didn’t just overflow – it flooded his entire property 3-feet deep
"It was like being in the middle of the river, that’s the only way to describe it," says Makowski.
Once the water receded he was left with a muddy mess. They had to shovel it out by the wheel barrow full.
"That’s about the only way to do it right now, fill up the wheel barrow," he says.
In Sunset Beach, Kaunala Stream took a turn for the worse, cutting too close for comfort for long-time resident Elizabeth Rathburn.
"It’s the first time this has gone this far over," she points out.
The stream usually flows straight, this time it curved along side her property, washing away several feet of her yard – steps from her home.
"It’s taken trees and brush, and stones," says Rathburn."This is the worst, this is the very worst."
Residents came with sandbags to divert the water away, but without success. The city says the stream is privately owned and not their jurisdiction. The Rathburn’s who are in their 80′s say they need any help they can get.
"I’m scared! Yes, and as you get older you get more scared," says Rathburn.
