Kailua-Kona held its first anniversary of the March 11 Pacific tsunami. Today was marked with reflection and remembrance.
The community came to honor the memory and resiliency of all those impacted by that devastating day. They paddled out in canoes and spread flowers into the waters of Kailua Bay.
Residents, visitors, family and friends gathered for a ceremonial exchange of aloha between the citizens of Japan and the communities of West Hawaii.
They vowed to never forget the lives that were lost, and to always remember the protection, love and aloha our islands were blessed with one year ago.
The Kailua Village Business Improvement District put on today’s "Tsunami Commemoration" event.
