Multiple cars vandalized in Waikiki

Was it a silly prank or a hateful message to drivers of SUVs? That’s what some Waikiki residents want to know.

Last night, tires on several parked cars near the Ala Wai were slashed, leaving the cars’ owners shocked and angry.

Instead of enjoying the day with a friend, John Jeppsson is filing a police report.

"But now, it’s just the day’s ruined," Jeppsson said.

That’s after finding two of his tires slashed.

"I hope I don’t have to spend too much money repairing it," Jeppsson said.

Blake Leming is spending $600 replacing his two flat tires. Similar to Jeppsson, Leming usually leaves his vehicle in this area overnight. And, he also drives an SUV. But unlike Jeppsson, Leming will not report this to the police.

"I recently had my motorcycle stolen from this area. I filed a police report and never got a call from the detectives so I don’t even feel like it’s worth my time," Leming said.

We found three cars, all SUV’s along the Ala Wai, with their street-facing tires, flattened. The fourth vehicle, belonging to Ambrose Splescia, was parked around the corner on Ohua Street.

"There was a fella at the building over here that actually saw the guy pull up on a moped, he had some kind of ice pick, I don’t know whether he had a skull cap on, he just looked like a local guy, he just went like this and popped both tires," Splescia said.

Splescia hopes this is an isolated incident.

"You’re raising our insurance rates, my insurance company came out and gave me a check and I have a deductible to pay. My boss lost money today because I wasn’t able to make it to work and what’s up with this stuff?" Splescia said.

No one knows exactly why this happened, but the victims have a message for whoever did this.

"Shame on you," Leming said.

The people we talked to still feel the area is safe and will continue to park near the Ala Wai.

If you have any information on this crime, you’re asked to contact Honolulu Police.
